It’s pretty common knowledge that your car needs functional tires in order to get anywhere. We all wish flying cars were ubiquitous by now, but unfortunately, that just isn’t the case. Like every other part of your vehicle, your tires require a watchful eye in order to ensure that you’re safe on the road. Some drivers have an incorrect assumption that their tires are invincible and are shocked when they find themselves on the side of the road, or worse, in an accident after skidding on a wet road.
While routine tire checks at your local auto repair shop (preferably G & M Auto Care in Orange, CA, of course) are highly recommended to guarantee your safety, there are also some warning signs that you can look out for on your own.
The tread on your tire is designed to give your car traction while on the road. After time and mileage, this tread wears down, leaving the tires bare and unable to grip the pavement as they should. Especially on wet roads, the water has nowhere to escape and your tires have difficulty maintaining contact with the street, increasing your odds of sliding out.
The good news is that there is a simple trick when testing if your tires are too worn down, it’s called the “Penny Test”. While your grandparents might have used the same technique, there is a reason that it has been used for generations…it works. Simply take a penny, flip ol’ Lincoln so that his head is pointing down, and insert into the tread. If you can still see the top of his head, your tread is low and you should seriously consider getting new tires.
Newer tires also feature “wear bars”. When the tread gets too low, these wear bar patterns appear, running perpendicularly to the tread itself, letting you know that it’s time to let the auto care specialists at G & M Auto Care take a look.
Cracks on the Sidewall
Tread isn’t the only thing to keep an eye on. Cracks on the sidewall of your tire are a warning sign that you’re developing a leak, or close to a full on blow out. There is no test required for this, just a visual inspection. If you see cuts or tracks, you know that it’s time to get in to the repair shop.
Blisters and Bulges
Another warning that your tires are worn down and close to a blow out is when you begin to see bulges and/or blisters on the outer surface. You’ll certainly be able to tell when your tire looks like it’s growing tumors. When you see this, it’s high time to get your car into the service center before it blows while travelling on the highway.
If your car begins to shake violently when going above 40 mph, unless you’re on a very bumpy road, you should know that something is wrong. There are a few reasons this could be happening; your shock absorbers are beginning to give out, your suspension is having issues, or your tires are misaligned or unbalanced. No matter what the root of the problem is, you should definitely get your vehicle looked at.
